The government driven Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP) awarded 1.04GW in renewable energy in the programme’s second tender round which concluded earlier this week.
This Window 2’s bidders were selected particularly for wind, photovoltaic and concentrating solar power (CSP) projects. In run-up to the bid, projects equally more than three times the awarded capacity were received.
Projects of note included the 138 MW Amakhala Emoyenia Eastern Cape wind project, the 95 MW Tsitsikamma Community Eastern Cape wind farm and the 75 MW solar expansion of the Mainstream Renewable Power, De Aar.
Of the total 1.04GW awarded, more than half of the capacity, 562MW, was awarded to wind farm projects, and 417MW was awarded to solar energy projects.
The government is hoping that these new projects will help combat the country’s high unemployment rates with subsequent economic growth, while international investors are seeking renewable energy project investment opportunities, and possibly even carbon credit registrations.
One aspect that was clear at yesterday’s selected bid announcements, is the desirability for renewable energy projects above and beyond the selected bidders. The programme’s third bid submission closing date is schedule for August this year.
